Delhi is among the cities covered in this initiative, with onions set to be sold to consumers at the same rate through fair price shops and mobile vans across all 13 districts. Delhi CM Rekha Gupta announced this plan on Tuesday, stating that her government aims to ensure that no one faces an onion shortage.
Mobile vans will be deployed in each district to sell onions at Rs 35 per kilogram, with the goal of increasing affordability for consumers who struggle to access fair price shops. Similar sales are also being offered through mobile vans in Lucknow, Varanasi, and Jaipur, while NCCF outlets and mobile vans will provide an alternative option in Noida.
Onions are currently selling at around Rs 50-60 per kilogram in Delhi's retail markets, prompting the government to intervene. Gupta assured that her government will not allow any shortage of onions in the capital, and is closely monitoring both availability and prices to ensure essential food items remain affordable for residents.
The latest intervention follows a review meeting held on August 25, which found no shortage of onions or sugar in Delhi but decided to prepare for potential price rises. If necessary, the government will procure onions from NAFED at market prices, while covering transportation and related expenses.
