Alteon's ambitious plan is to initially use its aircraft for maritime surveillance, providing governments with real-time visibility into activity in their waters. The startup's vision is to build an aircraft with a three-meter-wingspan that will fly close to the ocean's surface, climb, and turn through faster-moving air, repeating the cycle to gain energy from the wind.
This process, known as dynamic soaring, has been studied extensively Gabriel Bousquet, who researched it during his PhD at MIT.
However, Alteon still faces significant technical challenges in achieving its goal. The startup's recent test of its autonomous flight system over the Bay of Bengal was a promising first result, with the aircraft autonomously completing seven O-shaped cycles at more than 62 miles per hour, flying within one meter of the water's surface.

Nevertheless, proving that the aircraft can reliably extract enough energy from real-world winds to sustain flight for extended periods remains a daunting task.
Dr. Bharath Swaminathan, who earned his PhD from IIT Madras studying the stability of dynamic soaring, acknowledged Alteon's effort as commendable, but noted that local wind shear and turbulence can vary substantially, complicating an aircraft's ability to continuously extract energy from the wind.
"Keeping an aircraft airborne for several days using dynamic soaring would itself be a very big step, and a big achievement," he said.
Alteon's team of 20 in Bengaluru operates from a 10,000-square-foot facility, where they build four to five aircraft a week for testing. The startup has conducted over 200 test flights in the past 30 days, according to Sanghvi.
With Groom's backing and his own experience learning to build aircraft straight out of high school, Alteon is well-equipped to tackle the technical challenges ahead. As Groom acknowledged, "Ambitious problems are always going to come with risks." However, he believes in the Alteon team's ability to figure out these challenges, making him willing to take on this ambitious bet.
