Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Kyrgyzstan's capital Bishkek on Tuesday, warning that conflicts in one region can have far-reaching consequences for global energy security and supply chains.

"The crisis in West Asia has shown us that a conflict in one region does not remain confined there; it impacts global energy security, maritime trade, and supply chains," Modi said. "The Global South bears the brunt of these consequences."

Modi emphasized India's commitment to resolving tensions and conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy, rather than resorting to military action.

"We cannot limit ourselves to a mere 'action-reaction' mindset in the fight against terrorism," Modi said. "We must dismantle the entire ecosystem of terror financing, recruitment, radicalisation, and safe havens."

Modi also highlighted the need for countries to work together to combat terrorism, saying that those who use it as an instrument of state policy must be held accountable.

"Countries that provide shelter and support to terrorists must be sent a strong message: terrorism cannot be a strategic asset for anyone," Modi said, as Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif listened intently.

Modi expressed his commitment to the SCO's vision of promoting connectivity and cooperation among its member states, saying that India supports initiatives that connect markets, facilitate trade, and open new avenues for growth.

"However, respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations is paramount in these endeavours," Modi said. "This is also the core spirit of the SCO Charter."

Modi's remarks came as the war in West Asia entered its sixth month with no end in sight, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was also attending the summit.

"In today's interconnected world, the scope of security has expanded significantly," Modi said. "The SCO must play a key role in addressing these new challenges."
