A new group called Build American AI is planning to blast voters in key battleground states with ads advocating for data centers, according to several outlets. The super political action committee (PAC) behind this effort claims it wants to convince citizens of the virtues of having data centers in their backyards.

Build American AI is affiliated with Leading the Future (LTF), a super PAC heavily funded LTF has mostly used this money to donate to specific politicians who support or oppose candidates who advocate for Artificial Intelligence (AI). The group's ad budget is estimated to be in the millions of dollars, and it plans to focus its efforts on Kansas, Ohio, and Wisconsin, where concerns about data centers have become a central theme in statewide elections.

LTF has gained significant attention in Silicon Valley due to its involvement in AI-related election politics. However, this has also led to controversy, as some experts have raised concerns about the group's tactics and lack of transparency.

OpenAI, a prominent AI research organization, publicly distanced itself from LTF in June, stating that it does not direct the activities of the super PAC and has no visibility into its operations.

OpenAI also condemned some of LTF's tactics, writing: "Groups that are advocating on AI should be clear about their policy views, be honest about whom they represent, and not use tactics like astroturfing that obscure the real choices facing policymakers and the public." Astroturfing refers to making a paid, organized campaign look like grassroots support. This criticism highlights the need for transparency and accountability in the funding and activities of super PACs involved in AI-related politics.

While LTF is not the only super PAC pushing an AI agenda, it has gained significant attention due to its high-profile connections and funding. Other notable supporters of AI causes include Anthropic, which backs Public First Action, a group that advocates for AI regulation.
