47 Indian Hotels Get Michelin Key for 2026

India's hospitality industry is abuzz with the news that 47 hotels have been awarded the prestigious Michelin Key. This milestone marks a significant boost to the country's food tourism sector.

The French tyre company, Michelin, first started grading restaurants and hotels in its eponymous guide book over a century ago, with the aim of encouraging people to buy cars and drive more. Now, Indian hotels are getting a chance to shine, with the number of Michelin Key hotels increasing by nearly a third from last year's 36 to 47 for 2026.

Taj Falaknuma Palace and Taj Lake Palace have each earned three Michelin Keys. Meanwhile, Oberoi hotels in Agra, Udaipur, and Bandhavgarh, Leela Palace in Delhi and Jaipur, Raffles in Jaipur and Udaipur, and The Imperial, Delhi have been awarded two Michelin Keys each. The selection criteria for the Michelin Key include excellence in architecture and design.

As well as quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, and value for price and contribution to the local community.

Leading chefs and hoteliers in India say that the Michelin Key is a major shift for the country's food tourism industry. The Michelin Guide's emphasis on anonymity is a key factor in its evaluation process. This allows inspectors to experience restaurants and accommodations on an equal footing with guests. As full-time employees of the Michelin group, the inspectors conduct anonymous visits and stays, adhering to a universal set of five criteria that applies across all destinations.

This rigorous approach ensures that the value of a Michelin Key remains consistent. Regardless of the location – whether it's a hotel in India. A ryokan in Japan, or a boutique hotel in France – and is not swayed by regional preferences or biases.

According to the Michelin Guide, 112 Indian hotels entered the selection process for 2026, with 47 distinguished with one, two, or three Michelin Keys. Two hotels have been awarded three Michelin Keys. 15 have been awarded two, 30 have been awarded one, and 65 have been selected.

The French company did not disclose the number of inspectors who visited India or the details of their travels in order to preserve their anonymity.

Many Indian chefs abroad have received Michelin stars, but Indian restaurants still await recognition. When asked if the Michelin Guide plans to start rating restaurants in India, the response was: At this stage, we have no information to share on this subject. We will communicate in due course should an announcement be made regarding this market.

With the Michelin Key, Indian hotels are now competing with top-notch hotels globally. The Michelin Key represents a very special stay, two Keys stand for exceptional stay, and three Keys signify extraordinary stay.

The Michelin Guide did not disclose how its expenses for rating hotels in India last year and this year were covered.
