Bank customers across India may need to rearrange branch visits between September 28 and October 4. The United Forum of Bank Unions has called a three-day nationwide strike. In addition, lenders will observe a major national holiday during the week.
These events will temporarily disrupt over-the-counter services at many public and private lenders.
Branch services will face interruptions in multiple states. However, everyday digital banking will remain fully active for customers nationwide. People can still move funds without entering a local branch office.
The first round of branch closures begins on September 28. The UFBU called for a strike running through September 30. Union leaders warned that regular banking operations could face serious interruptions over those three working days.

Another major closure follows quickly on October 2. Banks across all states and union territories will shut for Gandhi Jayanti. The day marks the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Because it is an official national holiday, every physical bank branch will stay closed.
The closures will halt all operations that require physical counter access. Cheque clearances and cash deposit counter services will remain paused. Customers will also face delays for in-person KYC verification and document submissions.
Account opening requests and specialized administrative tasks must wait until staff members return.
Digital banking channels will function without interruption during this period. Automated teller machines will remain open for immediate cash withdrawals. Users can continue to send money through UPI and mobile banking apps.

Internet banking portals will also allow routine fund transfers and bill payments around the clock.
General banking holidays can vary significantly depending on the state. The Reserve Bank of India issues a detailed state-wise holiday calendar every year. While national holidays apply everywhere, regional holidays and union actions can differ by location.
Account holders should check the official RBI calendar before planning in-person visits. Local branch schedules may also differ from regular state government office closures. Planning ahead will help customers avoid unnecessary trips to locked branch doors.
