Rescue Efforts Underway as 1,500 Pilgrims Stranded After Kedarnath Trek Route Landslide

Approximately 1,500 pilgrims were left stranded in the Chirbasa area along the Kedarnath trek route after a landslide blocked the route, officials said. A joint rescue operation was launched by teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and District Disaster Response Force (DDRF) on Monday.

According to SDRF officials, the Sonprayag police received reports of pilgrims stranded on the other side of the route in the Chirbasa area, located about 3 kilometres beyond Gaurikund. An SDRF team from Sonprayag, led by Sub-Inspector Ashish Dimri, was dispatched to the site and found debris accumulated on the road near the Chirbasa helipad due to the landslide.

Continuous rockfalls from the hillside made the movement of pilgrims extremely hazardous, posing a significant threat to their safety. Assessing the situation, the SDRF, NDRF, and DDRF teams launched a joint rescue operation to evacuate the stranded pilgrims.

The rescue teams carefully guided the pilgrims across the landslide zone, ensuring their safe passage. They were then escorted to the other side and sent onward to Gaurikund. There, they were reunited with family members and other pilgrims.

The Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand remained suspended for the second consecutive day on Sunday due to incessant heavy rain, officials confirmed. The SDRF, NDRF, and DDRF teams worked tirelessly to evacuate the stranded pilgrims and restore normalcy to the route.

As of now, all 1,500 pilgrims have been safely escorted to Gaurikund, and the situation is under control. The SDRF, NDRF, and DDRF teams have been commended for their swift and effective response to the emergency.
