Microsoft Expands India Cloud Capacity with $20.5 Billion Investment

Microsoft's major expansion of its cloud infrastructure in India marks a significant milestone in the company's efforts to strengthen its presence in the region. The new region in Hyderabad is part of Microsoft's broader commitment to invest $20.5 billion across Asia. With the goal of building domestic capabilities in areas including AI servers and semiconductors.

According to Puneet Chandok, India and South Asia president at Microsoft, the facility will be "net accretive to the community", a phrase he used to describe how the new region aims to benefit local communities. This approach is reflected in the use of advanced air cooling technology, which eliminates water use for cooling at the new facilities.

Microsoft's investment in India also includes commitments to replenish water near its data centers and produce one gigawatt of green energy. These efforts aim to minimize the region's carbon footprint while providing a sustainable source of power for the facility.

The new region is part of Microsoft's $20.5 billion investment commitment across Asia. Which also includes partnerships with leading Indian companies such as India South Central and TOI. MeitY secretary S Krishnan has urged the company to expand its development and research operations in India alongside its data centers.

The expansion is also set to benefit from Microsoft's AI training efforts, which aim to train 10 million people in AI skills. According to Chandok, close to 125,000 individuals have already secured jobs as a result of these initiatives, showing the positive impact of the company's investments on local communities.
