Anurag Kashyap Slams SRFTI Violence, Accuses ABGP of 'Vote Chori'

Police have registered FIRs as they investigate the clash between students and members of the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat (ABGP) at Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata. There, several people were injured on Sunday, September 27.

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has reacted to the violence. Sharing a statement on Instagram that included a not-so-veiled reference to allegations of 'vote chori' in West Bengal and other parts of India.

"This is what they stole the votes for in Bengal. This and so much more," Anurag Kashyap wrote on Instagram, in a statement from the SRFTI Students' Union. "Process is the punishment," he added, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

The clash between students and ABGP members began during an ABGP programme at SRFTI's Main Theatre. There, the organisation had paid ₹15,000 to book the auditorium and received permission from the institute. However, students claimed they were not informed about the programme before permission was granted, and their phones were forcibly taken during the confrontation.

Students further alleged that they were called "urban Naxals", "terrorists" and "jihadis", and received rape threats. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many condemning the violence and the ABGP's actions.

The incident has left 30 students and 2 teachers injured, and several others are reported to be in a critical condition. The SRFTI Students' Union has called for a peaceful protest to demand justice and accountability for the perpetrators.
