Amit Shah Flags Off India's First LNG-Powered Train

Indian Railways has taken a significant step towards reducing its dependence on diesel by introducing an LNG-powered train. This will be flagged off by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah at Sabarmati Station on September 27.

The Ahmedabad Railway Division has implemented an LNG-based fuel system in the DPCs for the first time. This allows the engine to switch between LNG and diesel as needed.

According to Indian Railways, the introduction of the LNG-powered train is expected to result in annual savings of around Rs 23.9 lakh for an 8-coach rake, with each Driving Power Car (DPC) yielding an estimated saving of around Rs 11.9 lakh per year.

Two former diesel-powered commercial vehicles have been extensively tested over 2,000 kilometres, showing the effectiveness and dependability of the innovative conversion technology.

Each DPC has been fitted with an LNG tank with a capacity of approximately 2,200 litres. Which can provide enough fuel for around 444 km of daily operation.

As part of a rigorous testing regimen, researchers assessed the efficacy and dependability of a cutting-edge innovation that leverages liquefied natural gas to significantly reduce diesel usage – a shift that could potentially accommodate up to 40 per cent of current diesel reliance.

The LNG dual-fuel system is designed to maintain the power, reliability, and operating performance of the conventional diesel engine. Meanwhile, significantly reducing emissions and pollutants such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter.

As part of its efforts to reduce its dependence on diesel, Indian Railways is also exploring the use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in its railways, with the goal of minimizing its environmental impact.

With the successful implementation of the LNG-powered train. Indian Railways is expected to continue its efforts to reduce its dependence on diesel and adopt cleaner fuels. Contributing to a more sustainable transportation sector.

The introduction of LNG-based fuel system in the DPCs is a major step towards using cleaner and alternative fuels in Indian Railways. Aligning with the government's vision of a more environmentally friendly transportation sector.
