BJP Walks Out of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Over Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's Resolution on Statehood

Heated exchanges erupted in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah moved a resolution seeking restoration of full statehood. The BJP legislators raised slogans and entered the well of the House, demanding that the Speaker leave the chair.

According to National Conference legislators, the resolution includes ten amendments, eight of which aim to broaden the scope of the restoration of the special status that Jammu and Kashmir enjoyed before August 2019. An amendment moved by NC's Baramulla MLA Javid Hassan Baig seeks to add specific language regarding the restoration of Article 370 and the constitutional protections formerly available under Article 35A.

Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary expressed his concerns. Officials stated that Jammu and Kashmir is not the only border state and questioning whether the demand for statehood and special status should be dropped.

Opposition leader Sunil, Sharma stated. that the BJP is also in favour of statehood but objects to the language used in Omar's resolution, describing it as "unacceptable and unconstitutional" due to its sensitivity and potential to inflame tensions.

The resolution also references resolutions passed by the House on 26 June 2000 and 6 November 2024. The 2000 resolution, passed during the tenure of Farooq Abdullah, had sought restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's pre-1953 status and was rejected by the Centre.

The resolution's passage has sparked debate, with some lawmakers seeking to broaden the scope of the special status and others expressing concerns about the language used in the resolution.
