Madonna to Open 2026 MTV VMAs, Taylor Swift to Receive Artist Director Honors

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards are set to take place. And it appears that the night is already shaping up to be a celebration for Taylor Swift.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Swift will be receiving the inaugural Artist Director Honors, a new award created to recognize artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling. With this recognition, Swift will join the ranks of the most awarded artists in VMA history, currently tied with Beyoncé for the title of most-awarded musician in VMA history, with 30 awards each.

The new award will bring Swift's total to 31.

Swift is also set to make her debut with the music video for her new song, "Patient Zero," during the award show. The visual, which stars Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson, marks Swift's first single since her recent marriage to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden in July.

"Patient Zero" will also be Swift's first single since her wedding.

Other notable performers include GENER8ION, Yung Lean, Shaboozey, Gunna, Lisa, and Sienna Spiro. Snoop Dogg, a 13-time VMAs nominee and three-time winner, will be hosting the show. Snoop Dogg made his debut on the VMAs stage in 1994 and has since become a staple.

Closing the show in 1999 with Dr. Dre and Eminem and returning for a tribute to the Notorious B.I.G. and again for a performance with Eminem in 2022.

Madonna leads the 2026 MTV Video Music Award nominations, marking her 19th consecutive year in the running. The pop superstar has been nominated in every decade of her musical career, and she has won 19 competitive MTV VMA awards. In 1986, she became the first solo female artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award.

This year, she is up for 11 awards, including video, artist, and song of the year, as well as several technical categories.

Taylor Swift follows with the second-most nominations, with nine nods to her name. She is up for video and artist of the year, as well as several technical categories. Madonna and Swift are followed by Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter.

Each with seven nominations, and Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress, and Zara Larsson, each with five. Blackpink's LISA and Shakira are tied for third with four nominations each. Meanwhile, Tate McRae, GENER8ION, and Yung Lean are tied for third with three nominations each.

For the first time in 23 years, global pop icon Madonna will take the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards, setting the tone for a star-studded evening. Country music legend Kacey Musgraves will pay tribute to the incomparable Dolly Parton. A trailblazing artist whose unforgettable voice, nuanced songwriting, and bold fashion sense captivated audiences worldwide.

Parton's remarkable life was cut short in Nashville in August at the age of 80. Leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of musicians and fans alike.

The two-hour MTV Video Music Awards show will broadcast live on CBS on Sunday, September 27, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern and 4:30 p.m. Pacific, from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

This marks the first time since 2017 that the VMAs have chosen a location outside of New York or New Jersey. The show will also be simulcast on MTV and available to stream on Paramount in the U.S.
