India Sends Senior Official to SCO Meeting in Pakistan After 2 Years

India has sent its senior coordinator for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to Pakistan for a meeting. This marked the country's participation in a SCO event in Pakistan after almost two years.

The meeting, which began on Monday, is being chaired by Pakistan's national coordinator for SCO, Dr M Faisal, and attended by counterparts from member states, along with representatives of the SCO Secretariat.

The Indian delegation is led by Alok Dimri, who is an Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs. According to the Pakistan Foreign Office, the national coordinators would discuss a wide range of issues relating to SCO cooperation and coordination.

This includes the programme of activities under Pakistan's chairmanship, preparations for upcoming SCO meetings and events, and other matters on the agenda.

India's participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) hinges on establishing a stable bilateral relationship. One that can coexist with a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism. The Indian government has long advocated for a two-track approach, where counter-terrorism efforts are pursued in tandem with diplomatic engagement.

This stance was reinforced following the Pahalgam terror attack and the May 2022 military standoff between India and Pakistan, known as Operation Sindoor.

Pakistan will seek to advance the SCO's objectives under the theme 'Turning Vision into Action: Conne­ctivity, Innovation and Shared Prosperity'. The meeting is part of Pakistan's chairmanship of the SCO Council of Heads of State (CHS) for 2026-27.

India's participation in the meeting marks a significant development in the country's engagement with SCO. This has been a key player in regional security and economic cooperation. The meeting is also seen as an opportunity for India to strengthen its ties with other SCO member states and promote regional stability.

India's interest in strengthening ties with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is driving a diplomatic push. With the SCO coordinator set to visit Pakistan. The country is expected to extend an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the upcoming summit.

Operation Sindoor, which began in May last year, was a military confrontation between India and Pakistan. The operation was launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed several people.
