Mithun Chakraborty's Om Shanti Om Deewangi Song Caused Stampede on Set

Director Farah Khan revealed that a stampede occurred on the set of her 2007 film Om Shanti Om when Mithun Chakraborty arrived to shoot for the Deewangi Deewangi song. The incident happened in 2007, before Farah Khan's television show Dance India Dance, which Mithun Chakraborty later became a part.

Farah Khan recounted a key role in the filming of her song for Dance India Dance. Which aired before the show's main season. According to Khan, 32 actors participated in the initial shoot.

However, the atmosphere shifted dramatically with the arrival of Shah Rukh Khan, who was not part of the initial cast. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with the lighting technician jumping from his position to greet the superstar, prompting a flurry of commotion. Khan recalled feeling perplexed alongside Shah Rukh, wondering what had caused the sudden commotion.

When Shah Rukh Khan could not follow the dance steps, Farah added that during the scene, she told Shah Rukh to just follow the steps that Mithun da was showing him. “He could not follow him, so Mithun da started giving him tapli (smack on the head) and we have kept that in the shot!” she said.

Deewangi Deewangi was a special song in Farah’s second directorial venture, Om Shanti Om, featuring Shah Rukh alongside several stars. This includes Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Mithun Chakraborty, Kajol, Rani Mukerji, Priyanka Chopra, Rekha, Tabu, Karisma Kapoor and Juhi Chawla, among others.

A total of 32 stars were a part of the song.

Mithun Chakraborty's storied career in Indian cinema took its inaugural step in 1976 with the critically acclaimed film Mrigayaa. Directed by the renowned Mrinal Sen. The film'It was success earned him a prestigious National Film Award, a rare distinction for debutants.

The 1980s cemented Chakraborty's status as a dance and action icon. With notable performances in films such as Dance Dance, Pyar Jhukta Nahin, and Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki.

He successfully reinvented himself on television as the Grand Master of Dance India Dance and delivered a major career resurgence in the blockbuster The Kashmir Files. He has received three National Film Awards, the Padma Bhushan in 2024, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2022.
