Mumbai's Dalal Street saw a sell-off on Monday. With the stock price of recently listed NSE slipping below its IPO price for the first time. The NSE's closing price fell to this level, marking a six-month low.
Foreign funds led the day's sell-off, contributing to the market's decline. The sensex lost 1,124 points, a 1.5% decline, to close at 72,771 points, its lowest level since March 30 this year.
A combination of factors contributed to the market's slide. The rupee neared the 96-per-dollar mark. Meanwhile, Brent crude spiked to nearly $100 per barrel, following signs of escalation in the Persian Gulf region.

The impact of a weak monsoon on inflation, interest rates, and bond yields also weighed on investor sentiment, according to market players.
The market's decline was largely driven by a significant net selling by foreign portfolio investors, amounting to Rs 5,353 crore. Although domestic funds, with a net buying figure of Rs 5,189 crore, partially offset the selling, it was not enough to mitigate the pressure.
| Financial Metric | Reported Value |
|---|---|
| Percentage Shift | 1.5% |
| Financial Volume / Value | Rs 5,353 crore |
| Brent Crude Rate | $100 per barrel |
Rising crude prices are now posing a threat to the domestic inflation rate. The increase in yields on Indian government bonds and the adverse impact on the rupee are also concerns.

As a result, investors' wealth declined by approximately Rs 7.5 lakh crore, with the market capitalisation of companies listed on BSE now standing at Rs 474.4 lakh crore, according to exchange data.
The market's current state suggests a need for caution. The combination of geopolitical uncertainty, rising crude prices, and a weak monsoon is likely to continue impacting investor sentiment. As the market navigates these challenges, it is essential to monitor developments and assess their potential impact on the market.
