Kuruvila Brothers Finally Win Justice 36 Years After DA Case Against Ex-DGP Tomin Thachankary

Former Kerala DGP Tomin Thachankary has been sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of Rs 30 lakh in a disproportionate-assets case that has been ongoing for nearly four decades. The case, which was pursued by two brothers, Boby and Alexander Kuruvila, has finally come to an end at the Vigilance court in Kottayam, with the brothers expressing relief at the outcome.

Boby, a native of Mithrakari in Alappuzha, still recalls September 13, 1990, vividly. He was 22 years old at the time and had recently completed his degree course. A minor altercation with a friend in the neighbourhood had led to a complaint being filed with local police officers.

However, they refused to register a case, citing the incident as trivial. However, the complainant was a distant relative of Thachankary, and his family took the matter up with the IPS officer. This prompted Boby to file a fresh complaint.

According to Boby, the original complaint alleged that he, his father Kuruvila, and elder brother Alexander had stormed into the complainant's house and manhandled him. However, Boby disputes this, stating that the altercation had actually taken place at their own residence, not the complainant's.

Thachankary's tenure as Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1990 marked the beginning of a contentious case that would span decades. It was alleged that he leveraged his authority to implicate the Kuruvilas. A prominent family from Alappuzha, in a case stemming from a minor altercation involving a distant relative.

The brothers, key players in the landlord community, remained steadfast in their pursuit of justice, driven by a determination to hold Thachankary accountable for his actions.

Thachankary was found guilty of amassing disproportionate assets. With the court stating that he was in possession of Rs 64 lakh, a figure that exceeded his known sources of income. The brothers, who were present in the court, expressed relief at the verdict, with Boby stating that the case was not just about them.

However, about bringing an end to corruption. "We have been collecting information and meeting people who may have been affected by Thachankary's actions," Boby said.

The verdict has been welcomed by many, including the CPI(M)-led state government, which has ordered further investigation into the case.
