Canada, India to Strengthen Ties Amid Proposed Visit by PM Modi

Canada and India are strengthening their ties ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposed visit to Canada in December this year. Foreign Minister Anita Anand has confirmed that the two countries are finalizing the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). With the aim of expanding bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030.

During a recent meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Foreign Minister Anita Anand highlighted the importance of strengthening multilateralism and boosting UN reforms. The two ministers discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two nations.

Prime Minister Modi's visit to Canada in December this year is expected to be a significant moment in the two countries' economic relationship. The two nations have agreed to fast-track negotiations for a comprehensive economic partnership.

Canada and India have a long history of cooperation, having co-sponsored an inaugural multilateralism summit at the UN headquarters. The two countries have also been in touch at various levels. With several rounds of discussions and meetings between Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Canadian Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu.

Canada has committed to investing $1 trillion in the country over the next five years. With a focus on diversifying its trade and catalyzing investment in the country. This move is part of the country's efforts to strengthen its economic ties with India.

India and Canada have a strong foundation for cooperation, having previously co-sponsored a multilateralism summit. The two countries have also resolved a diplomatic row that sparked in 2023. This comes after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's comments on the killing of a Canadian citizen.
