ONGC Discovers Gas 43 km Off Odisha Coast, Boosts India's Offshore Energy Exploration

Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) has made a major discovery of gas in a deepwater well off India's eastern coast. This marked a significant milestone for the country's offshore energy exploration. Located approximately 43 kilometers from Konark, the find has the potential to facilitate quicker development if further appraisal establishes its commercial viability.

The discovery was made on September 18 at the MN-DW18-1-H-D well in the Mahanadi Offshore Basin. As part of ONGC's Samudra Manthan deepwater exploration campaign. The well has been producing gas for the past three days, with encouraging flow rates and reservoir pressure observed.

Reacting to the development, Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri described the discovery as a major milestone for India's offshore energy exploration. The well's proximity to the Odisha coastline could facilitate faster production if it is ultimately found to be commercially viable.

The discovery highlights ONGC's increasing focus on frontier offshore acreage. Deepwater discoveries often require substantial investment in appraisal and infrastructure before they can progress to commercial production.

ONGC's next phase of work will involve additional reservoir appraisal, evaluation of recoverable resources, and a commercial assessment. A decision on development will be taken only after these steps are completed.

The Samudra Manthan National Offshore Exploration Scheme. Designed to tap India's offshore oil and gas potential. Is expected to add more than 600 Million Metric Tons of Oil Equivalent (MMTOE) to India's reserves by FY 2030-31. The scheme will focus on extensive seismic surveys.
