  • Victim's vision likely to be lost due to severe burn injuries.

Sahu was attacked while returning home from the library on Monday afternoon by Sonkar and his friend Karan Kunjam. Who threw acid on her face and hand before fleeing the scene. The severity of her injuries has left her with deep wounds on her right cheek and right eye.

Which may result in a complete loss of vision.

A doctor who wished to remain anonymous revealed that Sahu has suffered 8 per cent burn injuries on her body and will require time to recover from her vision loss. Police quickly traced and arrested both Sonkar, 20, and his accomplice, Karan Kunjam, 20, within just 8 hours of the incident. The duo was subsequently paraded to the court complex. There, a mob of mostly women gathered, demanding justice for the victim and capital punishment for the attackers.

Harshita Sahu's childhood friend expressed outrage, stating that the community demands immediate hanging for the accused. Such an incident has never occurred in Balod's history, and the community will not rest until the perpetrators receive capital punishment.

Another friend, Vidya Sahu, a BA student, echoed sentiments, saying that the victim was an innocent and harmless colleague. No woman in their community has ever been attacked with acid. And this incident is a stark reminder of the need for justice and accountability.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Sonkar had requested Sahu to marry him on multiple occasions, but she refused. Enraged, Sonkar planned the acid attack with the help of his school friend Kunjam. The two purchased the acid on September 27 and had initially planned to carry out the attack during the Ganesh immersion procession.

However, the presence of tight security arrangements on the day deterred them from proceeding. Instead, they waylaid Sahu on October 5 and attacked her, before she was rushed to a local hospital and subsequently transferred to DKS super-speciality hospital in Raipur.
