Mike Flanagan, creator of the critically acclaimed Netflix series Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House, has shed light on a deliberate creative choice made in adapting Stephen King'It's Carrie. Unlike the 1976 film version, which prominently featured a graphic pig slaughter scene, Flanagan opted to sidestep this gruesome moment.

Instead, the key pig killing is depicted off-screen during a pre-prom montage, with Chris Hargensen's reaction captured as she watches with a mixture of excitement and detachment. This subtle change reflects Flanagan's approach to reimagining the source material for a modern audience.

Flanagan's reluctance to depict the pig's slaughter on the show is evident in his candid assessment of the content. The gruesome scenes, he believes, are a stark reminder of the cruelty inherent in the show's narrative. However, it was the stark contrast between Chris's reaction to the event and her own fascination with it that left Flanagan unsettled.

This dichotomy, he explains, informed their creative approach to the episode, with the aim of confronting the audience with the harsh realities of the show's world. By doing so, Flanagan hopes to underscore the characters' enduring struggles, making the experience even more visceral for viewers.

Chris Hargensen and her boyfriend Billy Thornton hatched a sinister plan in 1974, targeting a rural farm while its owner was away. Their sinister intent was to slaughter a pig. Then dump its blood on Carrie White, who had just been crowned prom queen, in a twisted act of revenge and humiliation.
