Arfat Sheikh Detained by ICE Agents at US Airport

Arfat Sheikh, a Kashmiri-born filmmaker, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at San Francisco International Airport on September 24, according to filmmaker Tara Dorabji.

Dorabji, who was accompanying Sheikh, reported that they were travelling together from San Francisco International Airport to Dulles when Arfat exited the plane before her. As she got off the plane, she walked by Arfat, without realising that he had been pulled aside on the jetway. The scene unfolded with Arfat being surrounded by numerous men.

Who were dressed in plain clothes and did not wear any uniforms that indicated they were federal agents.

During the interaction, Dorabji claimed that the men never presented a warrant or explained their reason for taking Arfat. They instead took Arfat off the jetway onto the tarmac, where he did not resist. Dorabji described herself as being in a state of distress, having difficulty moving due to her emotional state.

Arfat Sheikh is the son of Ghulam Nabi Sheikh. A celebrated Kashmiri folk singer who passed away in 2003 from a train accident. The family has raised questions about the official account of his death over the years.

Arfat grew up in the Valley and moved to the US as a student in 2019. He filed for asylum in 2020 and has been living in Alexandria, Virginia.

Friends and acquaintances have launched a campaign to "free Arfat," highlighting his dedication to speaking truth and defending human rights. Dorabji praised Arfat's character, stating that he is "one of the kindest and most courageous people I know." She also mentioned his film, Saffron Kingdom, which was created as a form of collective memory and truth-telling to share the story of his people.
