Mehli Mistry to Leave Tata Medical Centre Trust for Sixth Time Amid Succession Fight

Mehli Mistry, a director of the Pallonji Group and confidant of the late Ratan Tata, will not seek re-election as Tata Medical Centre Trust (TMCT) trustee when his term expires on September 30. According to an email sent to the board on September 15.

This marks his sixth exit from an institution linked to the late industrialist since his death in October 2024.

Mehli has served on the TMCT board since 2017. His departure will leave it to Tata Trusts chairperson Noel Tata, who will assume the responsibilities.

His children - Leah, Maya and Neville Tata - and ex-defence secretary Vijay Singh, whose term ends next year, will continue to play a role in the institution.

The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust are embroiled in a governance dispute with the Tata Sons board. Which established TMCT in 2005 to operate the Tata Medical Center hospital in Kolkata.

Conceived at a cost of Rs 700 crore. The 600-bed cancer hospital is modelled on Mumbai's Tata Memorial Centre and serves patients from eastern and northeastern India, as well as neighbouring countries. The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust had established the Tata Memorial Centre in Parel in 1942.

Initially with 80 beds, for an initial investment of Rs 5 lakh.

The Kolkata hospital was previously overseen by Mehli until he invited Noel Tata onto the TMCT board in October-November 2024. Subsequent to this, responsibilities were transitioned to him. Singh and Venu Srinivasan had also stepped down from the National Centre for Policy Analysis and the Small Animal Hospital in Mumbai in October 2025.

Mehli's departure from the board of Tata Education and Development Trust. The largest trust within the Tata Trusts conglomerate, highlights a broader trend. A long-time trustee, Mehli's exit coincides with a growing shift away from institutions closely tied to Ratan Tata's personal legacy, as the Tata Sons succession crisis intensifies.
