India's cheetah population has reached 60, with the latest births marking the beginning of a new genetic lineage from Botswana. A 32-month-old female cheetah, KJP21, gave birth to five cubs at Kuno National Park, with their father being a male cheetah brought from Botswana.
The births are a significant milestone for Project Cheetah, which aims to strengthen the genetic base of the cheetah population in India.
The development comes just months after India brought a fresh group of cheetahs from Botswana to Kuno National Park. Nine cheetahs, six females and three males, arrived at the park in February this year. The decision to bring cheetahs from Botswana followed a round of government-to-government discussions that began in December 2024.

According to Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav, the births mark the beginning of a new genetic lineage in India. The cheetah population in India has grown to 60, with 41 of the cheetahs being born in the country.
Importantly, these cubs also mark the beginning of the Botswana lineage in India, as their father is a male cheetah from Botswana, adding a new genetic lineage to India's growing cheetah population.
