Retro Games Ltd Delays C64 and ZX Spectrum Handhelds Due to Quality Issues

The C64 and ZX Spectrum handhelds, originally set to launch in October 2026, have been pushed back to April 2027 due to production issues.

According to a statement from Blaze, the creators of the handhelds, "after careful consideration, we have made the decision to move the release date from 15th October 2026 to 22nd April 2027. This date change applies to both standard and collector’s editions." The delay is attributed to the product construction not meeting the company's high standards.

Blaze acknowledges that the news is disappointing, but thanks players for their patience and continued support. The delay is not affecting the upcoming flagship retro handheld, the Evercade Nexus, which is unaffected by the quality concerns.

The C64 Mini and The Spectrum can provide quick HDMI goodness. With the latter being a little pricey at $154 in the US. For those looking for hardware perfection, options like the Commodore 64 Ultimate or ZX Spectrum Next, leveraging FPGA tech, are available.

The handheld versions are about convenience. However, for a true successor, consider the Gamercard, a Raspberry Pi portable by Grant Sinclair, nephew of the late ZX Spectrum creator Clive Sinclair, that manages to embody the essence of the OG machine while running everything from Quake to PICO-8 fantasy console games.

Chucky Egg fans may be disappointed, but the company says its upcoming release will be worth the wait.
