Sir Clive Sinclair's Nephew Unveils Unique Raspberry Pi Handheld, The Gamercard

Phil Hayton, a renowned tech journalist, has put the Gamercard, a Raspberry Pi-based handheld, through its paces. They revealed that a device that's as much about innovation as it is about nostalgia.

The Gamercard, designed by Grant Sinclair, Sir Clive Sinclair's nephew, is a unique blend of rough and refined design choices, with a focus on providing a platform for indie games and tinkering.

The Gamercard's design is minimalist, with a focus on showing its Raspberry Pi innards, which are stacked PCBs with the Pi Zero 2's ARM Cortex-A53 processor and 512MB RAM. This approach results in a device that's both compact and powerful. Measuring just 6.5mm thick despite packing a 720 x 720 IPS screen and 13 buttons.

The Gamercard's OS is designed to deliver a seamless Pi gaming experience. With a pre-installed Store and PICO-8 app that offer a range of games and creative tools. The device comes with a selection of full games pre-loaded.

This includes Bloo Kid 2, AstroBlaze DX, and Clive Townsend's Saboteur trilogy, which have been custom-tuned for the square screen and handheld's specific Pi hardware.

While the Gamercard's controls may not be ideal, with a strange circular disk keyboard and lack of ergonomic curves, Phil Hayton found the device's experimental nature and focus on creativity to be a major draw. The inclusion of a Quake port and PICO-8's "SPLORE" lo-fi cartridge browser added to the device's charm, making it a unique addition to the world of handheld gaming.
