Union Warns PM of 'Morally Wrong' Pensions Triple Lock Scrapping

Sharon Graham, Unite the Union's general secretary, has expressed concern to Prime Minister Andy Burnham about the potential impact of scrapping the pensions triple lock on the nation's elderly. The policy, which has been in effect for 16 years, guarantees state pensions a minimum annual increase of 2.5% or in line with the highest inflation rate.

As Burnham prepares to address the Labour conference, Graham's warning highlights the moral implications of such a move.

Which would require individuals earning around £12,500 annually to sacrifice their security. The move has been deemed morally dubious by some, particularly given the UK's low pension rankings among G7 nations.

Lucy Powell, Labour's deputy leader, has reaffirmed the party's commitment to the triple lock, a cornerstone of its 2024 manifesto. The policy, which has been steadily increasing the state pension by approximately £2,000 annually since the start of this parliament, is showing tangible benefits for pensioners.
