Veteran actor Nana Patekar succumbed to a cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa in the early hours of Thursday. This marked the end of an era in Indian cinema.

For decades, Nana was a household name, renowned for his versatility and ability to deliver performances that ranged from fierce to vulnerable and unpredictable. Behind the spotlight, however, he kept a significant aspect of his life private: his marriage to Neelakanti Patekar.

Neelakanti, born in Pune, had a nomadic upbringing due to her father's frequent transfers in the Central Excise Department. She studied Physics, but her father's encouragement led her to attempt the IIT entrance examination. Despite clearing the exam, she chose not to pursue a career in engineering, instead opting for theatre, a decision that would shape her career trajectory.

Neelakanti's talent was recognised early in her theatre career, with a notable win at the Maharashtra State Drama Competition in 1973. There, she took home the Gold Medal for Best Actress. This achievement marked a significant milestone in her Marathi theatre career, paving the way for her entry into Marathi cinema.

Her performance in Aatm Vishwas in 1989. Opposite Sachin Pilgaonkar, earned her the Maharashtra State Government's Best Actress award, further solidifying her reputation as a respected actor in the Marathi film and theatre space.

The couple's journey together began through Marathi theatre, where they reportedly met and developed a close friendship. Over time, their relationship blossomed into marriage in 1978, a period marked by happiness and growth.

However, their happiness was short-lived, as they faced a devastating personal tragedy – the loss of their first child, who passed away at the tender age of two and a half years. The couple later welcomed their second son. Malhar, and navigated the challenges of their relationship and individual careers, eventually parting ways while remaining married.

The circumstances surrounding Nana Patekar's death are still unclear. However, it is evident that his passing has left a void in the lives of his fans and the Indian film industry. As news of his death spreads, tributes and condolences pour in, acknowledging his significant contributions to cinema and his enduring legacy.
