Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden is recalling the mid-'00s battle between Sony's PlayStation Portable and Nintendo's DS. A fight that seemed one-sided in retrospect but was intense at the time. Layden, who led the PlayStation Portable project, remembers how threatening his company's entry into the handheld market felt.

"I remember when we showed the first PSP back in – what was that? 2003, '04, '05, something like that," Layden recalls in an interview with The Expansion Pass. "I had a friend who was working at Nintendo, and he sent me a text message saying, 'You bastards.' I said, 'Hey, bro, you know, it's all fun and games."

The PlayStation Portable's enduring popularity can be attributed to its remarkable ability to cultivate a loyal following. Even in the face of widespread piracy. The console's fortunes were bolstered by a key title.

Monster Hunter, which leveraged its co-op gameplay to foster a sense of community among Japanese gamers. As the platform's user base expanded, friends and acquaintances across the country were encouraged to purchase their own consoles and copies of the game, thereby creating a snowball effect that helped to sustain the PSP's commercial success.

Layden warns that Sony's struggles in marketing two platforms at the same time are a major issue. "If Sony does get in the handheld business again, you might almost set up a different company to do it.

That would be their only focus instead of having one marketing budget trying to put it against a handheld and a console and software. It loses its focus."

As whispers of a PS6 handheld begin to circulate, industry insiders are urging Sony to define its next move with clarity. According to former PlayStation executive, Jim Ryan's successor, Jim, the company's future direction is paramount before embarking on another hardware venture. The debate surrounding game ownership has intensified.

With Ryan cautioning that Sony's shift away from physical discs raises fundamental questions about the value of ownership.
