India and Nepal to Prioritize Cross-Border Connectivity and Transmission Infrastructure in November Visit

Delhi and Kathmandu are working towards a bilateral visit by Prime Minister Balen Shah of Nepal in the latter half of November. Aimed at strengthening overall cooperation between the two countries, particularly in economic, energy, and connectivity domains. This marks a significant development in India-Nepal relations six months into the new Nepal government led by Prime Minister Balen Shah.

Nepal's Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar this week. Laying groundwork for Balen Shah's India visit. The two officials agreed that India and Nepal would prioritize cross-border connectivity and transmission infrastructure.

Nepal is targeting a significant increase in its renewable energy capacity over the next nine years through run-of-river and storage projects. Clean-energy cooperation is a key focus in discussions between India and Nepal. As both countries recognize the importance of sustainable energy sources to drive economic growth and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

India has delivered significant aid material and disaster relief supplies in response to the humanitarian crisis following the August 26 flash flood. The country provided substantial assistance, including bridges, which is seen as a positive step towards strengthening bilateral ties between Delhi and Kathmandu.

At least 270 Indians remain missing due to the devastating floods in Nepal, with the international community closely monitoring the situation. India has played a significant role in providing humanitarian aid and support to the affected people.

The two sides have been discussing updates to the trade treaty. Which would cover services, investment protection, profit repatriation, and movement of parts and components. This move is expected to boost economic cooperation between India and Nepal.
