IIM-Jammu Denies Congress MP Claim of Student Fines for Skipping Modi Birthday Event

Indian Institute of Management, Jammu (IIM-Jammu) has denied a claim made by Congress MP and party in-charge of affairs in Jammu and Kashmir, Dr Syed Naseer Hussain, that the institute had issued notices to students asking them to explain their absence from Prime Minister Narendra Modi'It's birthday celebrations held on campus on September 17.

According to an IIM spokesperson, the claim was misrepresenting an email by the students' council as instructions issued by the institute. A "deepak lighting ceremony" was organised within the institute's premises on Thursday to mark Prime Minister Modi's birthday. The spokesperson denied that the institute had issued any notice threatening to penalise students.

Dr Hussain's claim sparked controversy, with many questioning the necessity of mandatory attendance at such events. However, the IIM spokesperson clarified that educational institutions should nurture independent minds, not compel students to attend political leaders' celebrations or threaten them with penalties.

The notice shared by Dr Hussain, which stated "Student Council, IIM-Jammu", was later revealed to be an email from the students' council, rather than a directive from the institute. The, spokesperson added. that the institute organises events of national importance that students can attend as per their choice.

Despite the controversy, the IIM has assured students that no fine will be issued to those who chose not to attend the event. The institute will continue to organise events that promote national unity and student engagement, while respecting students' autonomy and individual choices.

The institute will be organising a plantation and a sanitation drive on October 2. However, participation in it is left to the students.

As the academic year progresses, it is essential for students and administrators to engage in open dialogue to ensure that students' rights and interests are respected.
