Delhi and Dhaka Discuss November Window for Tarique Rahman India Visit

India and Bangladesh are on the cusp of reviving their relations with a proposed bilateral visit to India by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, set to take place in the latter half of November. The development comes after External Affairs Ministry officials initiated talks between the two nations, led by Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi.

The move is seen as an attempt to put their relations back on track following a period marked by diplomatic challenges. Rahman took office after winning the Bangladesh general elections and has expressed intent to foster regional stability.

According to official sources, both sides are currently exploring dates that align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's schedule, with formal documentation expected to be completed soon.

The bilateral visit provides an opportunity for both countries to address outstanding issues and strengthen economic ties. In addition to border security along the 4,096-kilometer frontier, negotiators are actively reviewing the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to expand duty-free trade corridors.

Cross-border energy cooperation remains a central priority, with talks expected to address ongoing power transmission agreements and fuel transit arrangements that support Bangladesh's domestic grid.

Sheikh Hasina has been residing in India, and diplomatic communication surrounding her status remains an active topic of discussion between the two governments, expected to be touched upon during high-level exchanges.

The bilateral visit marks a renewed chapter in diplomatic engagement between India and Bangladesh, with both countries seeking common ground under the BIMSTEC regional architecture.

A diplomatic transition is also underway at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, with High Commissioner M Riaz Hamidullah taking up a role as Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN, succeeded by Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam.
