Eight killed in Odisha family's tragic pilgrimage gone wrong near Maa Bagalamukhi Temple in Madhya Pradesh

Eight individuals, including seven members of a family from Odisha and a taxi driver, lost their lives when their vehicle was swept away by a rain-swollen stream near the Maa Bagalamukhi Temple at Nalkheda in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday. The family, comprising three children and two women, had planned the pilgrimage ahead of one of those who died's engagement.

According to police sources, the vehicle attempted to cross the swollen stream near the temple amid a strong water current. However, ultimately succumbed to the force of the water. Rescue efforts were initiated promptly, with officials retrieving the submerged vehicle; however, all the deceased were found trapped inside.

The taxi driver who perished was identified as Krushna Rajveer.

Nalkheda experienced significant rainfall (3.7 inches) in the preceding 24 hours, leading to a rise in water levels in the stream. Preliminary findings indicate that the vehicle likely attempted to cross the stream hastily and was subsequently overwhelmed by the water's force.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi extended his condolences, urging officials to maintain close coordination with the Madhya Pradesh government. In a statement, he noted that all necessary steps are being taken to expedite rescue and relief operations, as well as to respectfully bring the mortal remains back to Odisha.

The deceased, a resident of Bhubaneswar, had left for Ujjain on September 16 and was scheduled to return home after offering prayers at the Bagalamukhi Temple.
