Ed Sheeran Opens Solo Concert in Philadelphia, Calls Gaza Situation 'Catastrophic and Unjustifiable'

Ed Sheeran performed a solo concert in Philadelphia on Saturday, addressing the ongoing conflict in Gaza during his set. The sold-out show at Lincoln Financial Field marked the second stop of his highly anticipated Loop Tour.

This has been marred by controversy since Macklemore's pro-Palestinian comments sparked a tour withdrawal.

Sheeran expressed deep concern about the situation, describing it as "devastating" and "unjustifiable." He emphasized the importance of unity and humanity in his music and performances, rather than politics. The Irish singer has performed much of his Loop Tour concerts solo.

However, he had been joined for several songs at each stop by the Irish folk band Beoga.

Following Macklemore's comments on pro-Palestinian issues during a previous show, Sheeran's supporting acts withdrew from the tour in solidarity. Sheeran addressed this controversy, stating that he had engaged with venues to build bridges before the decision was made.

The show comes after a tumultuous week that opened with Macklemore being dropped in response to exclaiming "Free Palestine" during a September 5 show in New Jersey.

A group of around 50 pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside the stadium before Sheeran's show. With some attendees expressing disappointment at his decision not to take a stronger stance on the issue. One attendee, Hillary Steinberg, expressed her own views on the matter, stating that even if Sheeran was trying to avoid controversy, it was still a "political choice."

Sheeran's website did not list any replacement acts for the show, and tickets were still available as of Saturday afternoon. The concert marked one of several high-profile events in Philadelphia this year. This has been chosen as a key destination for the Loop Tour due to its reputation for hosting large-scale music festivals.
