Residents of Kyiv are facing a new reality as Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has escalated into a more relentless and unpredictable campaign. The city's air raid sirens have become an all-too-familiar sound, interrupting daily life with alarming frequency.
A 27-year-old Kyiv resident who had grown accustomed to the sounds of shelling in her apartment building describes feeling increasingly anxious as the situation worsened. She left her apartment in July after Russia's attacks on the city intensified. A change from previous years when she could often sleep through explosions.
According to government figures, Kyiv has seen an unprecedented surge in daily air raid alerts since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022. The situation worsened in recent months, with similar large-scale attacks taking place in August and September.

A mother of two has had to adapt her daily routine to avoid the constant threat of attack. She keeps a backpack with essential items, including a tourniquet for severe bleeding and a whistle, just in case. The cost of these items is estimated at $22 in US dollars and £16.6 in British pounds.
People are exhausted, says a 62-year-old resident who has lived on the seventh floor of an apartment block with her 98-year-old mother. The prolonged stress has taken a toll on mental health, with many residents relying on the "two-wall rule" to cope – keeping two walls between themselves and the outside world.
With Nadia Tsybina, a Ukrainian journalist, reporting from the front lines, President Donald Trump has repeatedly appealed for additional air-defence systems and interceptor missiles to help mitigate the situation. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has also urged residents to remain vigilant, warning of increased attacks on the Right Banks.
