Wayanad District Collector Returns to Work Just Six Days After Giving Birth

Meghashree D R, the Collector of Kerala's Wayanad district, defied convention by returning to her duties just six days after giving birth to her third daughter. The 2017-batch IAS officer had been under investigation for her decision to continue working despite being on maternity leave.

August 24 Meghashree Attended

On August 24, Meghashree attended to her official duties and functions before checking herself into a hospital. She gave birth to her third daughter the next day and resumed her responsibilities as District Collector from her camp office just five days later.

Meghashree assumed office as Wayanad District Collector on July 10. 2024, and led the rescue and relief operations following a landslide that struck the district on July 30. She has been actively involved in the rehabilitation of survivors and building work of a new township.

Despite Hailed Her Sense Duty

Despite being hailed for her sense of duty, Meghashree chooses to not make a big deal about her decision. The decision to continue discharging duties of the District Collector even after the delivery was personal she told The Indian Express. It is not mandatory that one takes maternity leave.

The decision depends on an individual, her health and circumstances.

"All of it, in a way. Development, empowerment and conservation should go hand in hand." Meghashree said when asked about the single biggest major shift for Wayanad district among tunnel, tourism and tribal empowerment.

Meghashree's decision to continue working despite being on maternity leave has sparked debate among experts. It's not a must that one takes maternity leave. The decision depends on an individual, her health and circumstances she shared.

Meghashree will finally proceed on her two-month maternity leave after handing over the charge to her successor, Chelsasini V. On Wednesday, she will officially hand over the responsibility of District Collector from her camp office.
