The Manipur legislative session kicked off on Wednesday after an almost three-and-a-half-year hiatus, with two Kuki-Zo MLAs making a long-awaited return to the Assembly. Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen and Saikul MLA Kimneo Haokip broke their silence, casting aside security concerns that had kept them away since the ethnic conflict erupted in 2023.

The absence of these two MLAs was not isolated; three others, including Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, LM Khaute from Churachandpur, and Ngursanglur Sanate from Tipaimukh, had also virtually attended the last session in February. The Kuki-Zo community has been represented

Speaking reporters his return, kipgen

Speaking to reporters on his return, Kipgen expressed relief at being back and attending the House session after a prolonged gap. "I'm happy to be here and attend the session," he said, hinting at the significance of this moment for him personally.

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh welcomed the participation of the Kuki-Zo MLAs, describing it as a positive step towards promoting unity and peace in Manipur. He attributed the development to the state government's sustained efforts to address trust deficits among different communities.

"Collective efforts can help us move forward on the path to peace," Khemchand Singh said, reiterating his government's commitment to inclusive dialogue, reconciliation, and efforts to restore peace and understanding.

However, a statement from The KIM cautioned that the participation of Kuki-Zo MLAs at this time would be inconsistent with their collective political position and aspirations. "There can be no return to business as usual without a political solution," it said, calling upon every Kuki-Zo MLA to demonstrate political responsibility, solidarity, and fidelity to the mandate and aspirations of the people they represent.

"Any Kuki-Zo MLA who chooses to disregard this collective directive should understand that such conduct will be viewed as a direct departure from the collective political position of the Kuki-Zo people and as siding against their legitimate political aspirations," The KIM added.
