  • JioStar said it is not offering sports at launch because of existing content deals, but did not rule out adding them in the future.
  • The absence of sports at its global debut marks a significant difference from JioHotstar’s offering in India, where the company says it has more than 500 million monthly active users and sports is a major audience draw.

JioHotstar, the revamped streaming platform from Reliance's media arm, is set to launch with a staggering 160,000 hours of entertainment content across 12 languages, including English, Hindi, and regional dialects like Gujarati and Malayalam.

However, one notable omission from JioHotstar's global debut is live sports – a crucial component that has long been the backbone of its Indian audience. The service will initially focus on offering TV shows, films, reality series like Bigg Boss, and live channels under the Star banner, including Star Plus, Colors, and Asianet.

According amit malhotra, jiostar's head

According to Amit Malhotra, JioStar's Head of International Business, "South Asian audiences have a deep connection with Indian entertainment across languages, generations, and households. At the same time, audiences globally are increasingly seeking stories and cultures beyond their own." This strategic move aims to tap into the underserved global audience.

Despite this, JioHotstar has priced its service at £19.99 (around $27) quarterly and £69.99 (around $95) annually in the UK, CA$19.99 (about $14) quarterly and CA$49.99 (around $36) annually in Canada, and SG$29.98 (about $24) and SG$69.98 (around $55) respectively in Singapore.

Interestingly, JioHotstar users in the UK, Canada, and Singapore will no longer be able to access the service through its app after September 2nd, with their existing login credentials working seamlessly on the new platform. However, customers seeking sports content may have to opt for an additional service.
