The US Mint has unveiled a special-edition $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump's portrait, marking the first time a living president has appeared on American currency in over a century.

The commemorative coin, designed to celebrate America's 250th anniversary, was launched on Wednesday and is priced at $61 (£45) for a roll of 25 coins. A bag of 100 coins costs $154.50.

The coins are made from an alloy of 88.5% copper, with zinc, manganese, and nickel making up the remaining balance. Despite their golden color, they do not contain any actual gold.

While the Thayer Amendment of 1866 bans the portrait of any living person on US notes, it does not explicitly cover coins. The Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, signed into law during Trump's first term, prohibits portraits of living people on the reverse (tails side) of coins.
