Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, has written to Leader of the House J P Nadda, expressing his shock that no FIR has been registered 24 days after the "purification" ritual in Uttarakhand's Haldwani, despite Nadda's assurance.

The Congress president recalled raising the issue in Rajya Sabha on August 13, following his public meeting in Haldwani on August 8, and Nadda's response at the time. "This is not just a sad matter for the Congress party, but for all of us," Kharge wrote.

"The Bharatiya Janata Party never supports such activities," Kharge said, condemning them and vowing that the national president would look into it seriously. He also quoted Nadda's earlier statement, saying "Whatever sentiments of yours have been hurt, that is a matter of concern for all of us."

Kharge pointed out that despite his assurance, no FIR has been registered against those involved in the alleged purification ceremony. "I am surprised that even after 24 days, no action has been taken," he said.

"This issue is not personal to me or my position as Congress president," Kharge clarified. "It's about the sentiments of crores of people who experience this cruel reality every day. Such wrongdoers must be taught a lesson."

Kharge highlighted the most objectionable aspect of the case: the purification ceremony being carried out in a manner contrary to the spirit of the Constitution and human values at the site where he had addressed a rally.

"Merely chanting mantras or performing rituals does not make a casteist practice sacred," Kharge added, referencing B.R. Ambedkar's experience during the Mahad Satyagraha.

Kharge asked Nadda to direct Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to ensure that an FIR is registered against those involved in the purification ceremony.

The Congress had earlier protested against an FIR registered in Uttarakhand against its leader Rahul Gandhi, who had urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to order an FIR over a "purification" ritual. Gandhi called the act a "crime", saying it illustrated the "untouchability" Dalits face across India and exposed the "BJP-RSS mindset".
