Nana Patekar, a renowned actor and philanthropist, passed away on Thursday morning after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa. The 75-year-old was found unresponsive and was swiftly transported to Manipal Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The late actor had served in the Indian Army during the Kargil War in 1999, as part of the Territorial Army. His experience in the war had been widely discussed, including on the popular game show Kaun Banega Crorepati.

Nana Patekar spent over a fortnight at the front lines in August 1999, near the Line of Control. He played a supporting role, assisting soldiers and working in the hospital at the base for a few days. During his time in Kargil, he was part of the Quick Response Team.

Reflecting on his experience, Nana, Patekar noted. a significant weight loss, from 76 kg to 56 kg, during his time in the war.

Before serving in the Kargil War, Nana Patekar had already won two National Awards for his acting work. He had undergone extensive training with the Maratha Light Infantry of the Army for three years in the early 1990s. Meanwhile, also writing his film Prahaar.

Undeterred, Nana Patekar reached out to senior officers from the division, and eventually met with Defence Minister George Fernandes.

According to Nana Patekar, his conversation with Fernandes was instrumental in securing his approval to join the front lines. Fernandes was reportedly impressed by Nana's extensive training with the Maratha Light Infantry, and subsequently gave him permission to serve.

Malhar Patekar, the actor's son, confirmed that Nana Patekar passed away on October 8 morning. The actor was found unresponsive at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa, and was rushed to Manipal Hospital. Despite efforts to revive him, Nana Patekar was pronounced dead at around 5:20 am, with the cause of death cited as a heart attack.

The Indian Army and local authorities have paid tribute to Nana Patekar's service and contributions to the nation. His legacy as a dedicated actor and philanthropist will be remembered for years to come.
