NHS Rolls Out Martha's Rule to All A&E Departments in England

The expansion of Martha's Rule is part of the NHS's wider efforts to prioritize patient safety. The nationwide rollout began immediately, with a projected completion date of March 2028, following a successful trial at seven trusts.

In 2021, Martha Mills, a 13-year-old girl from Northern Ireland, died after developing blood poisoning or sepsis while in hospital. Her family's concerns were not adequately addressed. This led to a coroner's ruling that she would have probably survived if transferred earlier to intensive care and given appropriate treatment.

Martha was admitted to King's College Hospital in London after a bike accident left her with serious injuries to her pancreas. During a family holiday, she had skidded on sand while cycling and fallen heavily onto the handlebars.

The NHS has introduced a dedicated phone number for patients and families seeking second opinions about their care. This new lifeline aims to improve patient safety by providing an urgent review mechanism.

Patients, loved ones, and staff in A&E units can call this number to trigger an urgent review if they are concerned that the patient's condition is deteriorating and not being adequately addressed.

Prof Aidan Fowler, a leading expert on pediatric sepsis, has praised the initiative. This is a major shift for families who have lost loved ones due to preventable errors, he said. The introduction of Martha's Rule will help ensure that patients receive timely and effective care.

The nationwide expansion of Martha's Rule follows a successful trial at seven trusts, where 69 calls were made to dedicated phone numbers. This includes some calls relating to acute deterioration following an urgent clinical review.

Health minister Baroness, Merron said. the initiative was part of 'wider efforts to put patient safety at the heart of the NHS.

The healthcare initiative is set to be completed by March 2028, following a successful trial. Those seeking access to Martha's Rule can begin by inquiring at their local hospital or NHS trust. Either through an online portal on the trust's website or a direct conversation with hospital staff.

The College Hospital, where Martha Mills was initially treated, has expressed its support for the initiative. The hospital has already begun implementing the new system and is working closely with NHS officials to ensure a smooth rollout.
