Rail Line Project Shelved Amid Ecological Concerns

The Indian Railways has put on hold the proposed 40-kilometer railway line connecting the border region of Uri with Baramulla. Citing concerns over its ecological impact.

The project, which aimed to enhance rail connectivity towards the Line of Control, has been returned by the Cabinet Secretariat and is no longer under consideration.

The shelving of the project has been welcomed by local legislator Javid Hassan Baig. Who expressed concerns about the potential impact on the town's future development. Baramulla cannot afford a project that disrupts the town's core and hampers its future growth, he stated.

The proposed Baramulla–Uri railway line was intended to extend the Udhampur-Baramulla rail line and strengthen the logistical infrastructure in the strategically sensitive border region. However, the project's passage through eco-fragile highlands raised significant ecological concerns.

In a resolution submitted to the ongoing Jammu and Kashmir Assembly session, Baig called for a comprehensive and independent geological, geotechnical, and seismic assessment of the proposed corridor to be conducted before the project's resumption.

The Indian Railways has also shelved the double-lining of the existing 74-kilometer Qazigund-Srinagar-Budgam stretch. This comes after a six-month delay in the proposed Anantnag-Pahalgam and Anantnag-Shopian rail links due to farmer protests.

The shelving of the Baramulla–Uri railway line and the Qazigund-Srinagar-Budgam stretch has sparked concerns about the impact on the region's infrastructure and the potential for future delays.

Experts are calling for a thorough examination of the proposed projects to ensure that they align with environmental and social considerations.
