Thousands Surround Kennedy Center to Protest Trump Demolition Threat

Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Friday evening. Protesters expressed deep fears that President Donald Trump might close and demolish the famous landmark.

The massive crowd marched from the nearby subway station into Washington's Foggy Bottom neighborhood. Their presence brought local vehicle traffic to a complete standstill.

Participants carried colorful signs, wore costumes, and chanted slogans during the peaceful demonstration. Many joined hands along the Potomac River waterfront for an action called "Hands Around the Kennedy Center." When speakers mentioned the president, the crowd responded with loud boos.

The demonstration was organized by the group Hands Off the Arts. Co-founder Chris, Raleigh said. the rally shows strong public resistance against White House plans.

Raleigh voiced worry that the administration might alter the site without warning the public. He pointed directly to recent unannounced construction work at the White House.

"Look at the East Wing," Raleigh said. "We got up one morning and there was a giant hole there."

Raleigh noted the public keeps a closer eye on the performing arts complex. He argued citizens must draw a firm line against the changes. "This may be the line that no one expected but this is where the line is going to be," he said.

The building has sat at the center of political conflict since 2025. Trump placed political allies on the board and added his name to the building facade. A federal judge ruled that step illegal and ordered the letters removed.

On Tuesday, the center's board voted to shut the facility indefinitely for repairs.

That shutdown vote came hours after U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper blocked another attempt to restore Trump'It was name. On Thursday, Judge Cooper ordered officials to give 30 days' notice before making any major physical alterations or demolishing the venue.

Local arts advocate Bud Wilkinson brought a chalkboard covered in Trump's name. Demonstrators gathered around to erase the words and draw hearts instead.

"The Kennedy Center is vital to the arts in Washington. We need it. We need this," Wilkinson stated.

Community members described severe damage to youth arts programming. Alina, Baciu said. students from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts lost valuable access.

Her daughter previously performed on the Millennium Stage and used costumes from the Washington National Opera.

"All of those things have gone away because of this craziness. And it just hurts my heart," Baciu said.

Laura Steinberg, a facility volunteer for 10 years, compared the tense standoff to historic acts of defiance. She pledged to block equipment physically if necessary. "This reminds me of that picture from Tiananmen Square, where that young man stood in front of the tank," Steinberg said.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump claimed he could resolve the venue's financial troubles. "We have a lot of people working very hard on it to save it," Trump said, demanding recognition for his efforts.
