CD Projekt Red, the developer behind the hit RPG series, has announced that it will be switching from its in-house engine, REDEngine, to Unreal Engine 5 for its upcoming title, The Witcher 4. This decision was not driven by problems with their previous game, Cyberpunk 2077.
According to joint CEO Michał Nowakowski, the assumption that the switch was due to issues with Cyberpunk is a misconception. Instead, he explains that the company's goal has always been to create visually and technically cutting-edge games, rather than focusing on developing technology itself.
The internal logic behind the decision was that CD Projekt Red makes games, and the REDEngine was a byproduct of doing so.

The incentive to switch came from the demonstration of Unreal Engine 5, which showed promise but required further development. Nowakowski and his leadership team recognized that the technology had potential and decided to collaborate with Epic on the engine.
By forming a relationship with Unreal and working together on specific technical requirements. CD Projekt Red believes it can make the engine work for their games. This strategic collaboration has led to their involvement in forging the engine from the inside.
The company's unique position allows them to contribute to the engine's development while also utilizing its capabilities for The Witcher 4 and the remastered release of The Witcher 3.
