South Western Railway to Unify Mangaluru Area, Aim for Smoother Train Operations

The city of Mangaluru in southern India's Karnataka state is set to become part of the South Western Railway zone as part of an operational rationalisation aimed at improving efficiency. This move will bring together three different railway jurisdictions currently serving the area: Southern Railway. South Western Railway, and Konkan Railway Corporation Limited.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the division among these zones has been creating operational difficulties. This led to delays, congestion, and coordination challenges in train operations. Trains arriving from the Goa side or Hassan side have had to pass through different operational areas and interchange points before reaching the station, resulting in inefficiencies.

The Mangaluru area is currently served by three distinct railway jurisdictions, each with its own operational boundaries. This division has led to a complex web of train operations. With trains frequently being diverted or delayed due to the need to navigate multiple operational areas.

Experts have noted that this division has resulted in significant operational challenges, including increased congestion and delays at Mangaluru railway stations. The introduction of a single railway zone is expected to alleviate these issues, enabling smoother and more efficient train operations.

The Railways has announced plans to rationalise the Mangaluru railway area and bring it under a single railway zone - South Western Railway. This move aims to improve efficiency and resolve operational issues affecting the Mangaluru railway area. With the goal of eliminating interchange conflicts between zones.

According to sources within the Ministry of Railways, this change is part of a broader effort to modernise India's rail network. The ministry has highlighted progress made in Kerala's railway infrastructure.

This includes 100 per cent railway electrification and over 180 train stoppages provided in the state over the last five years.

Additionally, 35 railway stations in Kerala are being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. These initiatives aim to enhance passenger experience and improve overall rail efficiency across India.

With trains no longer having to navigate multiple operational areas, delays and congestion are likely to decrease, leading to improved passenger experience.
