Smart beds and motion sensors are being tested in a UK trial to help patients with dementia live safely at home. The couple, who are part of an NHS trial using high-tech devices, say the technology gives them peace of mind.

For five years, Jyoti has shows of dementia. Her husband Bharat is now spearheading a UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) initiative aimed at integrating cutting-edge technology into the healthcare system nationwide. The goal is to minimize avoidable hospital visits and alleviate family stress.

Bharat and Jyoti's enduring bond, forged in 1977 at a magic show, has been a hallmark of their storied career. This has included high-profile encounters with royalty – including King Charles and Princess Anne – as well as numerous celebrities.

The trial uses sensors that send data back to a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and other clinical specialists. "Earlier signals means earlier intervention, which means we can head potential complications of an infection, potential challenges around care, we can head that off before it becomes a crisis," says Sarah Daniels, health and social care lead at the UK DRI.

As part of its efforts to improve dementia care, the UK government is allocating approximately £2,000 annually per facility to cover personnel costs and data analysis. This investment is expected to yield substantial returns. Given that nearly one million individuals in the country are currently living with the condition.

Bharat says they give him greater "peace of mind". "Even if it can cut down my worries by 5 or 10%, then it helps me and it will help other people too," he says. Jyoti also benefits from the technology, which tracks her sleep disturbances and heart rate.
