India's UPI Sees Record-Breaking Transactions in August

"The volume growth in August was further bolstered
Deepak Chand Thakur, co-founder and CEO of Network People Services Technologies (NPST), echoed similar sentiments, stating that the next phase of growth would come as newer UPI use cases develop. "As the festive season approaches, continued investment in resilient, intelligent infrastructure will be key to sustaining India's leadership in digital payments," he added.
Since its launch on August 25, 2016, UPI has expanded rapidly, with its annual transaction volume growing from 1.78 crore in 2016-17 to over 24,162 crore in 2025-26 – an almost 13,000-fold increase.

The growth trajectory reached another milestone in May 2026, when monthly UPI transactions crossed 2,300 crore for the first time. This marked a significant leap from Rs 0.07 lakh crore in FY17 to around Rs 314 lakh crore in FY26 – an increase of more than 4,000 times.
UPI's expansion has also extended beyond India, with the payment system now accepted in 11 countries, including Uzbekistan, Singapore, and France. NPCI, an initiative of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banks' Association (IBA), is the umbrella organisation for operating retail payments and settlement systems in India.
With its continued growth and expansion, UPI remains a vital player in the digital payment landscape, enabling real-time payments between peers and at merchants' end while making purchases.
