Rahul Roye's 'Aman' Premieres at TIFF, Tackles Gender Identity and Pregnancy

Short film Aman, directed by Rahul Roye, has premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, sparking conversations about gender identity and pregnancy. The film, which explores the complexities of gender and self-identity, has resonated with audiences worldwide, with many expressing their emotional connection to the story.

Aman tells the story of a trans man who discovers he is pregnant on the eve of his gender-affirming surgery. The film examining the gendered concepts of pregnancy and self-identity. Raising questions about the limitations and fragility of our definitions of gender.

According to Rahul Roye, the film's urgency stems from the backdrop of the 2026 amendment to the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act. This has been met with resistance from the trans community.

Following the world premiere, Rahul sat down with Hindustan Times to discuss the film's debut, the catalyst behind its narrative, and the casting process. The event was described by Roye as both exhilarating and overwhelming.

The film features trans actors Kabir Maan and Sirat, who are acting for the first time in the film. The casting process was vital, with Roye stating, "It was non-negotiable for us to cast trans actors for the trans characters. They bring a lived knowledge and authenticity that is very difficult to recreate otherwise."

Aman is now heading to its European premiere at the 70th BFI London Film Festival. Followed by its US premiere at the Oscar qualifying Tasveer Film Festival. The film's producers, including Apoorva Bakshi, Elle León Nostas, Neeraj Churi, Tushar Tyagi, and Abid Aziz Merchant, are eager to bring the film to an Indian audience, with a planned Indian premiere.
