Raghubir Yadav: 'Good' Roles for Actors Were Always Written, But 'Untrained' Actors Couldn't

Raghubir Yadav, the veteran actor known for his decades-long career in Indian cinema, has spoken about the challenges of playing complex roles. In a recent conversation with Hindustan Times, Yadav discussed his latest web series, Hunkkaar.

There, he plays a devious self-proclaimed godman accused of rape by a minor. The series has received widespread acclaim, with praise for Yadav's performance.

"I always look for these opportunities. That is how it is. Otherwise, what is the fun if you keep repeating the same thing over and over?" Yadav said about his approach to playing complex characters.

The actor emphasized the importance of internal change and feeling within the character to bring about a believable performance.

It's not about the get-up. It is about how you feel within. Once that is sorted, your body language changes.

The get-up and clothes are just additions to that,to find something in the character cannot come without training.

Raghubir Yadav does not agree that the proliferation of streaming platforms in India has opened up better roles for actors. "Such roles were always written, but actors just couldn’t do them." he said. Yadav attributes this to the lack of training among many actors, who often rely on memorizing lines rather than developing their craft.

"To find something in the character cannot come without training. Today, people just mug up four lines, stand and say, ‘I’m an actor’. We have been trained from the ground up," Yadav said.

He emphasized that training enables actors to find nuances in the script and enhance their performances.

"Not everything is written in the script. There is always something to the left and right of it. Finding something is your responsibility.

And if you are trained, you will find it. If you do just what is on the page, there is no fun in that," Yadav added.
