Path of Exile Co-Creator Predicts Diablo 5 Won't Meet Spring 2029 Deadline

Chris Wilson, lead designer on Path of Exile, has expressed skepticism about Blizzard's plans for Diablo 5, citing a tight three-year development timeline and the potential for delays. Wilson's comments come after Blizzard announced that Diablo 5 is set for release in spring 2029.

A timeframe that Wilson believes is quite specific and quite soon. According to Wilson, the development of Diablo 5 has only been the team's central priority for around five months, indicating a potentially rushed development process.

Wilson notes that Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred's release in April of this year suggests that development on Diablo 5 has shifted toward a sequel rather than a full expansion. A pivot similar to what Blizzard did at the end of Diablo 3's lifespan.

He also points out that Grinding Gear Games has "mature content pipelines and a custom engine specifically designed for that genre," but notes that development on Path of Exile has been going for eight years and counting.

Blizzard's financial muscle is undeniable, allowing the company to bolster its team's numbers, but this strategy comes with significant risks. The recent wave of layoffs and budget constraints suggest that such an approach could be unsustainable. Moreover, the need for extensive playtesting to fine-tune gameplay mechanics, such as drop rates and balance, adds to the complexity.

Wilson acknowledges that with careful planning, any challenge can be overcome, but his doubts about the game's launch timeline persist.

Wilson attributes Blizzard's aggressive release schedule to Microsoft's desire for more frequent releases from their core game series. Around BlizzCon, Johanna Faries, the president of Blizzard, told Bloomberg that the company is "going to ship, and ship big, and ship on time." This statement suggests that Blizzard is under pressure to meet Microsoft's expectations, which could impact the development of Diablo 5.

Despite the concerns, Wilson remains optimistic that Diablo 5 will be a success. Delays happen and are normal in this industry he says.

"I can't count the number of times I had to delay a Path of Exile league release, and players were OK with it." The release of Diablo 5 just might not reach our keyboards and mice before the 2030s roll around, but hey, patience is a virtue.
